Koot Pieterse grew up in the Vaal Triangle. He obtained his Masters in Engineering Management and his PhD at Pretoria University on the topic of Management of Technological Change. He was employed in various engineering and research capacities in factories for several years and also has many years of experience in tertiary education.

His focus on lean manufacturing has taken him on study visits to Japan, Australia, Holland and the UK where he visited factories and other research centres. He has presented papers on the topic of lean implementation and lean supply at various conferences locally and abroad.

Under his guidance masters and doctoral students from the Business school are contributing towards the expansion of knowledge about the implementation of lean manufacturing in South Africa and in 2005 this culminated in the publication of his book, “Leaning the South African way” and, more recently, he contributed to the South African edition of John Bicheno’s “Lean Service Toolbox”. He regularly publishes newsletters and articles in local media in an attempt to boost the adoption of lean practices in local industry.

Koot currently lectures Lean Enterprise Management and Operations Management at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s Business School.
